What is a Virtual Airline?
Virtual airlines (VAs) are an important concept and means for thousands of pilots to gain considerable enjoyment and meaning from their flightsim experiences. They provide an environment for pilots wishing to emulate the operations of airlines and share the experience with like-minded individuals.
A virtual airline simulates airline flights using aircraft and routes in the virtual world of Flight Simulator. Members of the virtual airline (virtual pilots) join the airline and choose flights which they then fly in Flight Simulator using realistic airline procedures. After the flight, virtual pilots report their flights in a pilot report (PIREP) and the hours of the flight are automatically added to their logbook. As flight hours accumulate, members progress through the ranks at the virtual airline.
Instead of flying aimlessly in Flight Simulator, virtual airlines aim to bring together a community of flightsim pilots and provide them with a fun and educational environment in which to fly. Virtual pilots seek to learn rules and discipline required to fully enjoy the simulation of an airliner flight. A virtual airline provides learning material, operational rules, fleet information and schedules to achieve that.
It also brings a community together who share the same interests. The community can participate in online events, share live streems and even fly together in a shared cockpit environment.
